Living Life Through Biblical Wisdom
Wisdom is something that I think all of us have heard before, but we aren't really sure what it is.
So we all know knowledge, and we all know wisdom. But what exactly is knowledge, and what exactly is wisdom?
What Even Is Wisdom, Anyway?
I'm so glad you asked! Well, if we're getting literal here, let's look at the dictionary. Having knowledge, according to Google, is having "facts, information, and skills acquired by a person through experience or education; the theoretical or practical understanding of a subject." Having wisdom, also according to Google, is having "the quality of having experience, knowledge, and good judgment; the quality of being wise."
Think of it like this: if you have the knowledge that touching the stove while it's hot will burn your fingers, then you will develop the wisdom to know that you should avoid touching the stove when it's hot.
Makes sense, right? Well, how do we apply that to our faith?
Wisdom Is Found Through The Lord
The main thing that we need to know about wisdom is that it comes from God. In the Book of Proverbs in Chapter 2, Verse 6, it says:
"For the Lord gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding."
A photo of this verse highlighted in my own Bible.
Further on in Chapter 9, Verse 10, it says, "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy is understanding."
This makes sense, right? I mean, think about how when we were kids, our parents expected us to follow their rules. This is because our parents have walked this path of life before; they know what's best for us and they know what the future holds.
This means the exact same thing with our Heavenly Father. After all, only the Lord knows our paths, because, well, He shaped them!
So, How Do We Live Out Biblical Wisdom?
Take a listen to James 3:13-18 (Christian Standard Bible).
This section of Scripture is so powerful. I mean, it really says all in one go how we need to be achieving Biblical wisdom. So, let's break it down:
We must be humble. We can't draw attention to ourselves.
We must be pure. We must have motives that are untarnished by earthly and demonic forces.
We must be peace-loving. We must learn to love one another regardless of our differences.
We must be considerate. We must take other people's thoughts into our consideration
We must be submissive. We must give our lives to the Lord.
We must be full of mercy and good fruit. We must be willing to give people chances (after all, the Lord always gives us second chances)!
We must be impartial. We act fairly and justly in every situation, regardless of our feelings.
We must be sincere. We must be 100% authentic and honest, not only with each other, but also with ourselves.
Overall, in order for us to gain Biblical wisdom, we need to be committed in our day-to-day lives in following Jesus. Being dedicated to learning and growing as a disciple of the Lord is what will transform us as disciples of Christ.
How Do I Ask for Wisdom in the First Place?
Maybe you're at a point in your journey where you know what the Lord is saying, but you're not sure how to get to the point of wisdom. So, what should you do in this situation?
Ask God for wisdom!
Yes, it's literally that simple! After all, it is said in countless parts of the Bible that all we really need to do is ask the Lord for what we need.
Now, gaining Biblical wisdom is not a one-and-done situation. No one ever really becomes a master at having Biblical wisdom. We're all sinners, and we all make mistakes. All we need to do is continue to seek the Lord in everything we do.
As we finish up this discussion today, I'd like to end off with a quote from one of my personal favorite worship songs. Let us all choose to listen and believe Him over the world.
"Out of all the voices calling out to me, I will choose to listen and believe the voice of truth."
